The launch of the department of guidance and counselling in the Ugandan ministry of education in 2008 might have delighted schools’ career departments. According to the ministry, schools are required to offer career guidance to their students.
Some of this responsibility has inevitably landed at the teachers’ doors, but their exact role remains a bone of contention.
As teachers, we are not expected to be career guidance professionals. We would expect the ministry or its arms to avail/train career guidance professionals who could bring expertise in theory and knowledge of the labour market and links with employers to the table, while teachers bring pedagogic knowledge and have sustained relationships with their students. Other key stakeholders such as employers and post-secondary learning providers are also important.
