Admission Requirements for Undergraduate Programmes
Introduction
Admission to University is based on attainment of a Uganda Certificate of Education or an equivalent and at least two Advanced Principal Level
Passes in approved subjects, all in the same sitting of UACE or an equivalent qualification.
The Weighting System
All subjects taken at UACE are grouped into four categories and weighted as follows for purposes of admission to any Programme of Undergraduate study in a university:
Essential 3
Relevant 2
Desirable 1
Others 0.5
The Essential A Level subjects for University Programmes must be passed with at least a Principal Pass. For a given candidate, not more than three subjects taken at the principle level carry a weight of 3,2, or 1.
Principal level subjects in excess of three is considered as others and carry a weight of 0.5. No more than two subjects are designated as Essential and a pass in a subject taken at a subsidiary level, such as General Paper and Sub-Nath, carries one point. A subsidiary pass ranges from grades 1 to 6.
In case of programmes where 'Essential' subjects may be three or more, an 'Essential set' of subject is defined. The best performed two subjects of the 'essential set' is then designated as essential and weighted three.
The third best done subject from the essential set is designated as relevant and weighted two.
When computing points, special programme requirements are also taken into consideration. For O Level grades, Distinctions 1 and 2 carry 0.3, credits 3 to 6 carry 0.2, passes 7 and 8 carry 0.1 and fail (F9) carry 0.0 weight respectively. More information can be got from the annually revised PUJAB Information Booklet. Consult your Career or Examination Mistress/Master.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCHOOL
Choosing a right school for your child is often a very difficult process requiring information about various schools and how these could affect your child.
A common question that many parents and students often ask is “How do you find the appropriate school from thousands available. Unfortunately, there are no simple answers.
However, it is always possible to find institutions that meet your educational and career needs, personal preferences and offer an environment in which your child will be comfortable.
In the following section we discuss some of the factors to consider when beginning the process of choosing the appropriate school for your child. Compare these factors systematically with respect to needs and circumstances and weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each against your needs.
The issues listed here may not exhaustively cover all matters of your concern. You should therefore be free to inquire about anything of your concern because any decision you make will affect child for the rest of his life.
Recognition
Many students have taken course and obtained awards from certain institutions only to discover later that they are worthless in the job market. Establish whether or not the institution or it’s a ward is recognized or accredited by recognized body.
In Uganda education institutions are recognized by way of license issued by Government and they depend on license to operate. Only institutions that adhere to the code of practice and set standards of accommodation, learning resources, administration and staffing, quality control, welfare, teaching and learning will be licensed.
When in doubt check with the Ministry of Education for the Minimum Standards required for registering a school or check with our website.
Academic Standards and Performance
Previous performance of the school will give a picture of the school academic achievements and indicates the school success record at helping students realise their potential. Ranking based on exam performance at UACE, UCE, PLE and entry grades of individual institutions are useful indicators.
Hygiene and Medical Factors
To know that your child is under good care is highly reassuring. The state of the kitchen, dormitories, toilets, will tell the standards of hygiene. Is the building well maintained, neat, and tidy? The medical facilities the school has in place should be of interest to prospective parents.
Discipline, Ethos and Traditions
Ethos and traditions associated with a particular school have a very strong influence in shaping the future personality and character of a child. What are the school’s disciplinary policies?
Are the pupils well mannered; are there rules to make the school a more civilized community? Is the school facing any problem with alcohol, drugs, smoking, homosexuality or strikes? These and many other questions will invariably influence your decision.
Charges and fees
It is important to know the charges to be able to make long-term plans for your child’s education. Funding should be planned well in advance to ensure that financial worries do not interfere with studies.
Fees charged by institutions will normally vary according to the quality and range of facilities offered, cost of living, level of competitiveness and academic standard etc. Some schools may offer a variety of payment methods ranging from lump sum payments method to installments.
The quality and the teaching, learning, boarding and recreation facilities, how they are maintained and used by the students is very important to the success of any educational process. The state of the laboratories will tell a great deal about science teaching and the library facilities will reveal the availability of reading material. You will want to establish whether the staff teaching and caring for your child is competent.
School and parent relationship
Education is a partnership between the school, child and parent and therefore close contact between the three parties is very important for the success of the child’s education. It enables the parent to interact with teachers and discuss the progress of his/her child. Does the school you are considering encourage contact through parent’s days, Class days, sports days etc.
Extra-curriculum programmes
Academic performance alone may not give a rounded picture of the schools real success or failure at enabling students to reach their full potential.
You may want to find out the schools policy on extracurricular activities and whether the school will get the best out of your child who has a particular interest or talent in sport, music etc.
Make sure that the sporting and other interests your child would like to develop or continue to develop, is catered for by the school. Some schools offer scholarships to extra ordinary performers.
Subject and curriculum strength
It is important to find out which subjects the school teaches best, how study skills are developed and how a school responds to the student’s individual abilities and needs.
What is the school policy on the teaching of particular subjects and what has been their success record in these subjects? These are key considerations that will have significant bearing on the future career of your child.
Size of the school
As a parent, the size of the school may be a significant factor in your choice. In general, the smaller the institution, the more personal attention your child is likely to receive from the teachers, school administrators and support staff.
The large number of students in some schools may reduce individual contact between students and teachers. However, some schools are big in size with an equally larger number of teaching and non teaching staff.
Mixture or Single Sex
The choice as to whether to send a child to mixed or a single sex school matters for a variety of reasons. You may feel that your child do better without the opposite sex to attract or distract or you may feel that, as life is coeducational, this is what you wish to prepare your child for.
Boarding or Day
Whether a family should send their child to a boarding or day school will depend on a whole range of factors. Whatever your reasons for choosing any of the two, make sure that your choice meets the specific needs of your child.
Location
The location of the school relative to various environments is important factor to consider. Urban rural and suburban institutions offer different advantages and pose separate problems. In general, living costs are lowest in rural schools and highest in urban schools.
Some parents will feel that education will be best realized in a setting where weather, landscape, peace and quiet fresh air and space will combined to provide a unique educational experience.
Others are primarily concerned with the schools proximity to major cities where facilities and amenities are accessible. Whatever your preference, the final choice must maximise the benefits of education available to the student.
Role of religion
Some schools have a particular religious orientation. You may be interested to know the role of religion in the life of the school as this could affect the personality of your child.
Catering
Most children join school at very tender and formative stages of their life and will therefore need good nutrition for the development of their brain and entire body. Good diet significantly improves performance.

Why plan for a career?
Work is an important part in our lives. We depend on it for income, but its important that work be rewarding, interesting, use our skills, and fit in our other interests and commitments.
Career planning is intended help us identify career paths that give us best possible combination of work and non-work values. Career planning is life-long process that should be undertaken from the very onset of formal education. Important questions to consider when designing a career plan will include:
· What kind of work would you find interesting?
· What do you want from work?
· What are you good at?
· What are your inherent abilities interests and work values.
Career change
Changing career is necessary and inevitable part of today’s world of work. You need to rethink your career several times throughout the working life for a number of reasons. For most people, changing profession provides the only way to remain employable. With rapid technological advances, old jobs are fast disappearing, and entirely new generation of jobs are being created.
Finding a job that is interesting, enjoyable and less stressful is one of the reasons most people seek career change. Such people are prepared to take lower salary in exchange for a more enjoyable working environment, more time off to be with their families and opportunity to pursue non-work interests.
Employment and job market trends
While acquisition of knowledge and skills is widely accepted as passport to a successful career, the possession of any qualification, although an invaluable asset, is not enough to guarantee you a fulfilling career. An important determinant of long- employability are shifts in the employment structure, general trends in employment patterns and the labour shortages and surpluses associated with these changes. Considering the annual growth, and changing employment patterns, it is important to be aware which career will offer more opportunities and which ones will be competitive. Ask yourself some questions
· What skills are required in the labour market?
· Is employment available in this field?
· Number of vacancies at present?
· Do opportunities vary geographically?
· Is the number of jobs growing or shrinking?
· Are there many applicants?

GUIDELINES TO APPLICANTS FOR ENTRY INTO TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS FOR
DIPLOMA COURSES 2011/2012 ADMISSIONS
DIPLOMA COURSES IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS
You should note that admissions will flow from University courses to the courses offered by other tertiary institutions. You will only be considered for what you have applied for, so candidates should endeavour to make appropriately choice. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:
1. The minimum entry requirement for all Diploma courses is 2 principal passes for Arts courses and 1P, 2ss for Science courses.
2. The subject requirement and weights for courses offered at Tertiary Institutions 2010/2011 are in table 1-v. Study the tables before applying to any of the Tertiary Institutions. It has been noticed that some for instance, candidates apply to National Teachers Colleges (NTs) which do not offer the course/subject combinations the candidates may choose. Kyambogo University (KYU) is a case in mind. Note that KYU offers only French, Home Economics and Technical Education for Diploma in Secondary Education. For Engineering programmes all Ordinary Diplomas were phased out, with exception of Ordinary Diploma in Science Technology Physics (STP), Chemistry (STC) and Biology (STB) and ordinary Diploma in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (DRA).
3. Use the 4 figure codes (course and college codes) given in table one to apply for courses and colleges of your choice. First two figures are for course and next two figures are for college offering the course.
4. Please note that there will be no change of colleges after admissions have been done. If you cannot go to a particular college for one reason or another then do not apply to it. If you apply to it and get admitted then fail to take-up the place, you will have blocked a place for somebody else. But note also that your insistence on particular colleges may lead to not being admitted.
5. ITEK and UPK were merged to form Kyambogo University and some diploma courses were phased out for Government programmes. Please note the changes accordingly.
6. Uganda Colleges of Commerce (UCCs) offer UDBS as a course with the various option:- ( i) Marketing ( ii) Accounting (iii) Stores Management
(iv) Purchasing and Supplies Management
Note: Students should not that once a student has been admitted on Government or Private Sponsorship in Universities, he/she is automatically cancelled from being considered for Diploma programmes in Tertiary Institutions. Therefore, one should not apply for private sponsored courses in Universities if he/she wishes to be considered for government funding for diploma in tertiary institutions.
