Scholarships

Scholarships which are offered for Ugandan students for study abroad are managed by the Central Scholarships Committee of the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Sports.

This committee is responsible for advertising, short listing, interviewing and nominating successful candidates to the awarding foreign governments and agencies. Most of the scholarships are meant for special training, in areas of critical importance for the government, for which the training facilities are inadequate or not available in Uganda/locally.

Over the years Uganda has received such scholarships/offers through various schemes from several countries. The various types of awards include the following:

1. Awards through multilateral cooperation

2. Offers through bilateral cooperation and

3. Direct offers to individuals through embassies of awarding Governments, Institutions or Agencies.

Scholarships awarded to Uganda through Government
These offers are received on an annual basis, and mostly routed through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The major and regular donors are:

The United Kingdom through the Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme which calls for 12 nominations annually from whom 6 -8 beneficiaries are selected on average.

India through the General Cultural Scheme and Commonwealth Scheme.

China through the Chinese Government Scholarship Programme (13 on average annually).

Australia through the Australian Development Scholarship Programme ( 12 offers annually).

Egypt through Egyptian Government and Hussein Mubarak Initiative (calls for 20 nominations).

Russia through Government (calls for 7 nominations awards 2 -3 scholarships).

Turkey through Government ( not on annual basis but awards 2 -3 scholarships).

Japan through Government (awards 2 -3 annually), and

Algeria through Government ( 56 offers in 2009)

Scholarships through direct awards to beneficiaries by awarding Countries and Agencies
Some countries to make direct awards to the beneficiaries. These countries include but are not limited to:

1. The Netherlands

2. Belgium

3. Norway

4. Germany and

5. Australia.

Institutional Offers/ Awards
Awards targeting institutions, such as universities, are offered directly to the institutions of higher learning whereby invitations for nominations are solicited for by the donor directly from the benefiting institutions.

Direct Awards
Individuals, parents and students reach embassies and other agencies in search of scholarships on their own initiative. In such cases, the Embassy or Agency has the prerogative to make offers outside the formal offers made to Government.
