Architecture and Construction

These include careers in designing/ planning/ managing/ building and maintaining the built environment.

This career cluster is concerned with the evolution, utilization and significance of science, mathematics and technology in industry. People who work in this area like working with their hands or machines, have aptitude in maths or science, particularly physics, have ability to be accurate, analyse and solve problems, use good judgment and also communicate well.

There is a booming construction industry in Uganda and the region, ranging from road design and construction, bridges, boats, stadia, as well as housing, including warehouses. This is a result of, efforts for rehabilitation and reconstruction of run-down social facilities.

There is also general upsurge and demand for social facilities like roads, hospitals, schools, etc., as the population is increasing at astronomical level. Experts, for instance, estimate that within the next ten years, there will be housing shortfall of 1.6 million housing units to accommodate the increasing population and the ever migrating population from rural to urban areas, estimated at the rate of 5.6% per annum.

For instance, Kampala alone needs 100,000 housing units every year to accommodate the new migrants and the growing population. The need for expansion of roads and creation of new ones is also high, as the number of road users also increase.

In the same vein, as population shifts from rural to urban and vice-versa, there will always be increase of need for social facilities in the areas of settlements.

Architecture and construction occupational category is, therefore, one that will always have shortfall in labour supply, across all levels, if more youth do not enroll to train to join the profession.

There are job openings in both the public and private sector as well as numerous chances of self employment in this field. Therefore, the graduates of this career clusters have most opportunities.

But caution has to be taken in that supervisory and managerial roles may continue to offer less opportunities as those duties can also be performed by people who have transferable supervision and management skills from other clusters. The boom is actually at the level of workmanship, i.e., practical work in building, drawing, surveying, fitting, plastering, painting, designing, roofing, plumbing, etc.
