What Information Technology really means

IT is the linkage between almost every modern career cluster

A farmer receives mobile money. A student accesses digital learning. A hospital retrieves patient information. A bank detects attempted fraud. A district office submits reports electronically. A hotel uses a booking system. A developer in Jinja builds software for a client somewhere else. All of these depend on information technology.

Digital literacy is not the same as an IT profession.

Using social media, typing or browsing is useful digital literacy. Professional IT goes deeper into a specialisation such as software, networks, cloud, data, cybersecurity, hardware, systems analysis or digital infrastructure.

Uganda Is Becoming More Digital

The Government of Uganda has made digital transformation a national development priority. Uganda's Digital Transformation Roadmap 2023/24–2027/28 identifies five major pillars:

  1. Digital infrastructure and connectivity;
  2. Digital services;
  3. Cybersecurity, data protection and privacy;
  4. Digital skills and literacy; and
  5. Innovation and entrepreneurship.

Government's current strategy therefore gives today's learners an important message: Digital skills are becoming basic economic skills.

People often use IT and ICT interchangeably. They are closely related, although ICT is slightly broader.
